The Coveralls The coveralls have been the subject of intense interest and scrutiny lately, so here's a page to add to all the white noise... The coveralls are not yet identified, but most people are leaning to this being an old racing suit. I found this link that suggests this notion may be pointed in the right direction. If you click the link you'll see they offer a reproduction vintage racing suit that is similar in design to the "Star Wars coveralls." Most notably, the collar is very similar in design, but more on that later. Web searches for vintage racing sites and old pictures haven't turned up much. It would be great to find this suit to nail down the details, but at least there are plenty of good reference photos out there. In the original trilogy the coveralls are worn by:
There is a great reference picture of Luke X-Wing, a Tie Pilot and an AT-AT Driver in the Visual Dictionary. The first picture below shows my take on these coveralls using these reference pictures and the Marmit TIE Pilot figure. From the pictures I've seen, these are the elements I've identified:
Note that the Left Shoulder Pocket is segmented into four, or maybe five, pockets. Three of these pockets are thin, and were used for holding code cylinders for the X-Wing Pilots and Imperial Technicians (scanning crew). Also notice this is not a square pocket! The area holding the code cylinders is angled at the bottom. Some have surmised that the segmenting was done by the costume crew, but I think it was part of the original racing suit because there are several suits with the stitching with no code cylinders. Why stitch these but not use them? Also note that the flapped pockets on the imperial uniforms have a shallow point, while the rebel uniforms are straight across. Was this on purpose, or just a variation in the found item? Maybe we'll find out one of these days. The X-Wing pilots and Rebel Technicians are clearly seen with two flapped pockets on both legs (one at the hamstring and the other just below the knee). But I don't have a clear shot of Imperial staff with all of these pockets (just the hamstring). Did the prop/costume department add or delete these pockets? Seems like it would be too much trouble for an unused detail. Perhaps there were variations in the original found item? Pics of Imperials with all four pockets would be appreciated if you have them (or any other good reference photos for that matter).
